The first Make Radical Websites workshop was so fun, I was determined to do it again. The main thing I learned is that, just like when I run DnD, I packed way more than the students or I could realistically get through into one session. Now that I have done it at a more reasonable pace, I’m even more impressed that everyone in the first class walked out with their own website and at least some sense of how to edit it. This time we did a three-class workshop over three weeks, following the same material but in a more thorough and step-by-step fashion.

I’ve stumbled into a new project to consciously reshape how I use the internet, and I’m still stumbling through it, so I’m writing this to define it a little more and give it some terms and goals.

Earlier this month I spent an awesome afternoon in the back room of Virtua Gal, in the Lloyd Center Mall, teaching a great group of friends and strangers how to edit their own websites. This was an experiment to see if anyone was interested, how possible it would be to go from 0 to Website in an afternoon, and if it, like, mattered.

So, we will offically launch the public trial of Octothorpes tomorrow, but now I can tell you that it’s been public and actively used for the last month. In a way, it was more public in October than it is now, but we’ll get to that.

Octothorpes is currently in a sort of liminal stage between launched and not launched, but it got posted to Lobsters and Hackernews today! Which was quite a surprise to both of us. So, if you’re reading this because you found out about us on one of those sites, here’s a little context for the project.

So my friend Nik and I made a way to use hashtags on any website. You set up little networks, like webrings, so that all the sites on the network can see the hashtags just like they were part of the same platform. We’re calling it Octothorpes and if you just want to get started using them, go here.
